Are you safety-focused, practical, and enjoy hands-on work in an outdoor environment? We’re looking for a Landfill Operator to join our Balclutha team. This is a varied role where no two days are the same, combining plant operation, customer service, and site support to ensure our landfill and transfer station operate safely and efficiently.

About Us

WasteCo NZ Ltd offer a range of waste management services across the South Island including household and commercial waste collection, specialised medical and quarantine waste handling, industrial and utility services (portaloos, city sweeping, spill response, hydrovac, wastewater), and waste sorting both on site and at purpose-built facilities focusing on recycling and diverting materials from landfill.

About the Role

Reporting to the Site Manager – Balclutha, the Landfill Operator is a key member of the WasteCo Balclutha team. This hands-on role involves operating site machinery, supporting transfer station operations, and providing excellent service to customers using the facility.

This role may include weekend work, with flexibility required around availability.

Day-to-day, you’ll:

• Operate site machinery including a loader, excavator, and compactor
• Assist with operations in the Transfer Station Kiosk
• Liaise with customers, providing clear guidance and escalating any issues to the Site Manager promptly
• Ensure all paperwork is completed accurately at the end of each day
• Work and drive productively and safely, following all WasteCo driving policies and New Zealand Transport rules
• Report incidents immediately to the Site Manager – Balclutha
• Attend required toolbox meetings
• Liaise with management regarding any fleet or equipment repairs
• Carry out all other duties reasonably requested

What you’ll bring

• At least 1 year of experience in a similar role (preferred but not essential)

• Full Class 1 driver license required, however, a Class 4 driver licence is preferred.
• W, T, R endorsements, required
• Basic computer knowledge
• A positive, friendly attitude with a customer-first mindset
• Ability to manage multiple time-sensitive priorities
• Clear communication skills and strong customer service focus
• Good time-management and problem-solving skills
• Flexible, adaptable, and confident in decision-making
